KU Dining Reopening Plans & Safety Protocols

To help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 and to protect the safety, health, and well-being of our community, we are making important adjustments to on-campus dining for 2020-21. This webpage and our dining operations plan will continue to evolve in accordance with guidelines from the CDC, the University, and the state health department's recommendations. Our goal is for everyone to feel at ease when we welcome you back to one of our dining facilities this fall. For the most up-to-date info regarding coronavirus, please visit the Protect KU website.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Everyone must wear a face covering.
  • Staff will have face covering and gloves on at all times.
  • Staff has been trained on enhanced safety standards and new COVID-19 protocols including symptom monitoring, CDC, and ServSafe guidelines for handwashing and food safety.
  • Staff will be screened daily for COVID-19 symptoms.
  • We are expanding our sanitation practices in dining locations with a heavy focus on high-frequency touchpoints.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available at all dining locations.

Mobile Order and Touchless Payment Options

  • We are adding touchless payment options at all registers for KUID cards.
  • Registers accept Apple and Google Pay.
  • We are adding a mobile ordering option to be able to get food faster with less time in line.

Guest Signage & Communications

  • Additional signage will be prevalent at each dining location on campus and will include floor markers, table signage, flow of traffic, stanchions, plexiglass barriers, and more to properly allow social distancing in our Dining Areas.

  • We will be relying heavily on digital communications in the fall including disposable menus/QR codes to replace previously physical menus, and social media (IG: @Kudining) to help stay engaged and communicate with guests.

Dining Options

  • All self-serve stations will be converted to staff-served stations such as salads bars, yogurt bars, condiments, and more.
  • We will be expanding our Grab and Go and pre-packaged options throughout the campus to include more readily available in dining locations. All menu items served on campus can be taken to-go from any location.
  • No reusable cups will be allowed to be filled in dining operations.
  • Catering options will be tailored to individual meals and options that support social distancing.

Dining Seating

  • We will be following the state and county guidelines to allow for social distancing. All tables will be placed 6 feet apart to allow for social distancing in the dining areas.

  • Seating in dining rooms will be significantly reduced. All food will be provided in to-go containers. Therefore, we will highly encourage guests to carry out their orders.
